Here is Vince Guaraldi’s breakthrough album — musically, commercially, in every which way. After numerous records as a leader or sideman, for the first time a recognizable Guaraldi piano style emerges, with whimsical phrasing all his own, a madly swinging right hand and occasional boogie-influenced left hand, and a distinctive, throat-catching, melodic improvisational gift. Without Keith Moon, the Who may have lacked the restless firepower that distinguished their earlier albums, but Face Dances had some of Pete Townshend’s best, most incisive compositions since Quadrophenia. “Don’t Let Go the Coat” was one of his better odes to Meher Baba, “You Better You Bet” was a driving rocker, as was the rueful “Cache Cache,” while “How Can You Do It Alone” was a solid ballad. While Townshend’s songs were graceful and introspective, Roger Daltrey delivered them without any subtlety, rendering their power impotent. Capitol pushed the Beach Boys for too much material in too short a time for the group to maintain as much quality control as would have been desirable. Consequently, most of their pre-1965 albums contain a high degree of filler, and thus stack up poorly next to those of such contemporaries as the Beatles, who were able to maintain high standards on almost all of their tracks. Cray found himself in some pretty intimidating company for this Grammy-winning blues guitar summit meeting, but he wasn’t deterred, holding his own alongside his idol Albert Collins and Texas great Johnny Copeland. Cray’s delivery of Muddy Waters’ rhumba-rocking “She’s into Something” was one of the set’s many highlights. Continue reading “Albert Collins / Robert Cray / Johnny Copeland – Showdown! The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys marked the commercial and artistic apex of the second coming of Traffic, which had commenced in 1970 with John Barleycorn Must Die. The trio who made that album were augmented by three others (Ric Grech, Jim Gordon, and “Reebop” Kwaku Baah) in the interim, though apparently the Low Spark sessions featured varying combinations of these musicians, plus some guests. After the harrowing Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon returned to calmer, more conventional territory with Imagine. While the album had a softer surface, it was only marginally less confessional than its predecessor. Underneath the sweet strings of “Jealous Guy” lies a broken and scared man, the jaunty “Crippled Inside” is a mocking assault at an acquaintance, and “Imagine” is a paean for peace in a world with no gods, possessions, or classes, where everyone is equal. Instead of trying to compete with a newer, fashion-conscious pop marketplace, Linda Ronstadt removed herself from the rat race, recording an album of traditional pop standards with Nelson Riddle. Ronstadt’s voice isn’t always showcased to a fine effect on these songs, but the record is an interesting change of pace. And it would have been more interesting if she hadn’t repeated its formula on her next two records. This album was the group’s magnum opus in the perception of many onlookers and fans, and it still plays well, though its flaws are more evident than they were at the time. The “Song of Scheherazade,” really a suite for the group supported by the London Symphony Orchestra and a chorus, started with guitarist-composer Michael Dunford, who had a personal fascination with the medieval literary work Tales of 1,001 Arabian Nights Continue reading “Renaissance – Scheherazade And Other Stories (1975) [1983, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

After both John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley left Miles Davis’ quintet, he was caught in the web of seeking suitable replacements. It was a period of trial and error for him that nonetheless yielded some legendary recordings (Sketches of Spain, for one). One of those is Someday My Prince Will Come. The lineup is Davis, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and alternating drummers Jimmy Cobb and Philly Jo Jones.
