Neil Young had just released his third solo album After the Gold Rush a few months before he played Carnegie Hall in December of 1970, where he offered up a new set of introspective songs that were relatively toned down when compared to the stomping full-band jamming of 1969’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. This would just be the beginning of a run of classic albums that continued throughout the ’70s, and both sides of Young’s musical personality — the hushed and patient songwriter side, and the side that tended toward rugged rock — were integral to how that peerless run played out. Just two months after the release of his seminal album After The Gold Rush, Neil Young played a solo show at The Shakespeare Theater, Stratford, CT on January 22 1971. The show was filmed and recorded, and the concert shown on German TV later in 1971. In 2020, while Neil and his team were reviewing his Archive for future projects, Neil re-visited the 16mm film and audio recording of this show that had been preserved in the Archive for almost 50 years. Piecing together the tapes and footage, Neil realized that he had the full concert – the film of which is the earliest live footage of Neil performing that is known to exist. Cat Stevens tends to be lumped in with the early-’70s singer-songwriter school led by James Taylor and Carole King, but he actually fits in rather neatly with such wistful English contemporaries as Nick Drake, Syd Barrett, and Donovan. Tea for the Tillerman’s “Wild World,” “Into White,” and “Longer Boats” indicate that he may have been a more gifted tunesmith than the lot of them. As with the best of the Brit folk-rockers, Stevens mixed melancholy with whimsy. Country Joe (Joseph Allen) McDonald is an American musician from the 60s’ psychedelic rock group Country Joe and the Fish. Since the breakup of his group in 1971, McDonald continued to convey his political and ecological views through his music. This 1975 album, which includes the anthemic tune “Save the Whales!”, reflected an increase in McDonald’s ecological commitment, and features former Fish Bruce Barthol and ex-Instant Action Jug Band member Phil Marsh. Bigger than Woodstock, and controversial from the get-go, hundreds of thousands of people descended on the island. Many of those without tickets set up camp on a hill overlooking the festival site, opposing the consumerism of the event and intent on taking the music back by any means necessary.
