Composer Mike Oldfield rose to fame on the success of Tubular Bells, an eerie, album-length conceptual piece employed to stunning effect in the film The Exorcist. Born May 15, 1953, in Reading, England, Oldfield began his professional career at the age of 14, forming the Sallyangie folk duo with his sister Sally; a year later, the siblings issued their debut LP, Children of the Sun. By the age of 16, he was playing bass with Soft Machine founder Kevin Ayers’ group the Whole World alongside experimental classical arranger David Bedford and avant-garde jazz saxophonist Lol Coxhill; within months, Oldfield was tapped to become the band’s lead guitarist prior to recording the 1971 LP Shooting at the Moon. It was pretty clear that Billy Joel had run out of steam by 1993’s River of Dreams. He had shown signs of wearing on its predecessor, Storm Front, but his trademark melodic gift disappeared on River of Dreams and his words, even performances, were bone-tired — he even called the last song “The Last Song (No More Words).” So, it was no great surprise that he did not rush to record a follow-up, and when he started murmuring toward the end of the decade that perhaps he wasn’t interested in pop music anymore, nobody who paid attention could have been surprised. An Innocent Man is the ninth studio album by American singer-songwriter Billy Joel, released on August 8, 1983. The concept album is a tribute to the American popular music of Joel’s adolescent years with Joel paying homage to a number of different popular American musical styles from the late 1950s and early 1960s, most notably doo-wop and soul music. The album cover artwork was taken on the front steps of 142 Mercer Street, just north of the intersection of Mercer and Prince Street in the SoHo neighborhood in New York City. If The Hurting was mental anguish, Songs from the Big Chair marks the progression towards emotional healing, a particularly bold sort of catharsis culled from Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith’s shared attraction to primal scream therapy. The album also heralded a dramatic maturation in the band’s music, away from the synth-pop brand with which it was (unjustly) seared following the debut, and towards a complex, enveloping pop sophistication. With John Denver, Denver seemed to be making attempts to change his pastoral country boy image. The cover photo shows him in an intense, energy-charged performance shot, while the instrumentation is more lush and relies less on acoustic guitar than previous efforts. His own “Downhill Stuff,” and a cover of “Johnny B. Goode” are rock numbers, while Bryan Bowers’ “Berkeley Woman” is an uncharacteristically lustful song for Denver to record. Elsewhere, the haunting flute of Jim Horn on “Joseph and Joe,” and Herb Pedersen’s warm “Southwind” make the album a worthwhile buy. Perhaps John Denver’s worst-selling album, Whose Garden Was This, is largely a record of cover songs, starting with the Tom Paxton-penned environmentalist anthem that is the title track, and including Denver versions of such songs as the Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Mr. Bojangles,” The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Golden Slumbers.” Denver’s own contributions included the awkward “I Wish I Could Have Been There (Woodstock).” Though Denver tried in a sleeve note to weave all this into a theme, something about “all the things that change as we grow older.” In fact, Whose Garden Was This was an expendable collection of second-rate Denver songs and first-rate songs done better by others.
