The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys marked the commercial and artistic apex of the second coming of Traffic, which had commenced in 1970 with John Barleycorn Must Die. The trio who made that album were augmented by three others (Ric Grech, Jim Gordon, and “Reebop” Kwaku Baah) in the interim, though apparently the Low Spark sessions featured varying combinations of these musicians, plus some guests. While the album had a softer surface, it was only marginally less confessional than its predecessor. Underneath the sweet strings of “Jealous Guy” lies a broken and scared man, the jaunty “Crippled Inside” is a mocking assault at an acquaintance, and “Imagine” is a paean for peace in a world with no gods, possessions, or classes, where everyone is equal. It was a period of trial and error for him that nonetheless yielded some legendary recordings (Sketches of Spain, for one). One of those is Someday My Prince Will Come. The rather wordily titled “Andrew Powell and the Philharmonia Orchestra Play the Best of The Alan Parsons Project” was mainly recorded at Abbey Road, with the exception of the orchestral session for the I Robot Suite, which was done at CTS in Wembley. It was Helmut Fest at EMI Records who suggested using the Scrabble board as a way of getting around the world’s longest album title. One of the biggest difficulties I found in orchestrating these tunes is that certain kinds of “rock” themes sound like muzak if they are played by a violin or other string section: hence the solo sax on Games People Play. The One That You Love was Air Supply’s second international release and perhaps their finest all-around studio outing, spawning three top ten hits, including a number one with the heart-wrenching title track. The sheer drama of “Here I Am” and the swooping orchestration of “Sweet Dreams” complete this smash-hit trilogy, and as suggested by their name, a sense of air and space pervades other pop-tastic ballads such as “This Heart Belongs to Me” and “Keeping the Love Alive.” This is definitely the ideal second step for those looking beyond the greatest-hits package.
