Lulu – Shout!: The Complete Decca Recordings (2009)

Lulu - Shout!: The Complete Decca Recordings (2009)

Although Lulu’s mid-’60s Decca recordings have been issued piecemeal on numerous anthologies, somehow no one executed the logical idea of putting them all together on one release until this 42-track, two-CD collection. All of her 1964-1967 sides for the label are included, serving as a comprehensive document to the first three years or so of her recording career. Ambrosia – Anthology (1997)

Ambrosia - Anthology (1997)

For various legal reasons, no Ambrosia recordings were released on compact disc in America until 1997’s Anthology, and while it’s an imperfect collection, it does offer a reasonably thorough overview of the group’s career. It only briefly touches on the band’s early art rock records, choosing to concentrate instead on their early-’80s soft rock hits like “Biggest Part of Me,” “You’re the Only Woman,” and “How Much I Feel.” Continue reading “Ambrosia – Anthology (1997)”

The Band – Stage Fright (1970) [1994, DCC Remastered]

The Band - Stage Fright (1970) [1994, DCC Remastered]

Stage Fright, the Band’s third album, sounded on its surface like the group’s first two releases, Music from Big Pink and The Band, employing the same dense arrangements with their mixture of a deep bottom formed by drummer Levon Helm and bassist Rick Danko, penetrating guitar work by Robbie Robertson, and the varied keyboard work of pianist Richard Manuel and organist Garth Hudson, with Helm, Danko, and Manuel’s vocals on top. Santana – Africa Speaks (2019)

Santana - Africa Speaks (2019)

No matter the numerous musical terrains Santana have traversed since the late 1960s, their trademark Afro-Latin sound is so recognizable it often dominates the band’s material. Not here; on Africa Speaks that sound is just one among many — some tunes here are almost unrecognizable as Santana). Produced by Rick Rubin, Africa Speaks was compiled from a whopping 49 songs, all recorded over ten days at Shangri-La in Malibu — many in a single take — most inspired by African melodies and polyrhythms. Paul Revere & Raiders – The Legend of Paul Revere (1990)

Paul Revere & Raiders - The Legend of Paul Revere (1990)

This double-CD set presents a real conundrum, on a lot of levels. For starters, on its face, 55 songs may well seem like overkill to the casual fan who only knows or remembers (or thinks they only remember) five or six big hits by Paul Revere & the Raiders. And there are more modest single-CD collections to be found on this band that seem less daunting Continue reading “Paul Revere & Raiders – The Legend of Paul Revere (1990)”

George Thorogood & The Destroyers – Greatest Hits: 30 Years Of Rock (2004)

George Thorogood & The Destroyers - Greatest Hits: 30 Years Of Rock (2004)

Released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of George Thorogood & the Destroyers — their first album may not have come out until 1977, but they cut their first sessions in 1974 — Capitol’s Greatest Hits: 30 Years of Rock was designed to replace 1992’s The Baddest of George Thorogood and the Destroyers as the band’s definitive single-disc overview. Considering that the 1992 disc is out of print (as is the exhaustive and exhausting 1997 double-disc set Anthology), this does indeed stand as the best compilation currently in print Continue reading “George Thorogood & The Destroyers – Greatest Hits: 30 Years Of Rock (2004)”
