Diana Ross - All The Great Hits (1981) [2018, Reissue, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Diana Ross is certainly a diva of goddess-like proportions. Whether joined by the Supremes, or out on her own, her voice is unmistakable and powerful, plus she possesses the uncanny ability to take songs penned by others and make them very much her own — to imbibe them with her very soul. Charles Aznavour - Idiote Je T'Aime... (1972) [2004, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Throughout his long, prolific career, Charles Aznavour has worked in a variety of musical styles, from traditional French chanson to small-combo jazz to easy listening pop to a few rather odd side trips into the distinctively Gallic form of ’60s beat music known as ye-ye. Yet 1995’s IDIOTE JE T’AIME–yes, that translates to “I love you, Idiot”–showcases Aznavour in the style for which his perhaps best known and most beloved by his fans, backed by a full yet never overbearing orchestra (think Petula Clark, not Nelson Riddle-era Frank Sinatra.) Steely Dan - Aja (1977) [2010, Japanese SHM-SACD, Reissue, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Steely Dan hadn’t been a real working band since Pretzel Logic, but with Aja, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s obsession with sonic detail and fascination with composition reached new heights. A coolly textured and immaculately produced collection of sophisticated jazz-rock, Aja has none of the overt cynicism or self-consciously challenging music that distinguished previous Steely Dan records. Buddy Guy – DJ Play My Blues (1982) [2004, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Buddy Guy - DJ Play My Blues (1982) [2004, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Buddy Guy’s music has changed a great deal since this album was recorded in Chicago in 1981. It is possible that Guy has never sounded better than this, tearing into some deep indigo blues, letting his guitar wail loud on every cut, and playing with inspiration, especially on the title cut and “Dedication to the Late T-Bone Walker,” a track that seems to spring from some place deep within himself. Nor was he the only one on fire at the sessions. Continue reading “Buddy Guy – DJ Play My Blues (1982) [2004, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Richard Thompson - Rumor And Sigh (1991) [2018, MFSL Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]

While Richard Thompson’s devotees will tell you the man is a triple-threat genius — passionate vocalist, compelling songwriter, and sterling guitarist — even his most loyal supporters will concede that the dour nature of his songs and the no-frills production of many of his albums make the bulk of his catalog tough sledding for the uninitiated. Given this, 1991’s Rumor and Sigh is arguably the best album for those wanting to sample Thompson’s work for the first time. Bryan Ferry – Frantic (2002) [CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Bryan Ferry - Frantic (2002) [CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Frantic manages to touch upon virtually every musical style of Bryan Ferry’s career. Ferry has proved to be as interested in covering other artists’ material as penning original songs, and he straddles a smart mix of originals and covers here. Two brilliant Bob Dylan songs appear among the opening tracks: “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue” sees a return to the eclectic, energetic experimentation of Ferry’s early albums with Roxy Music as a lush modern swirl of instruments mingles with the singer’s stylized vocals and throwback harmonica; “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright” completes the Dylan pair, as Ferry intones with confidence and again takes up harmonica over Colin Good’s rolling piano. Alice In Chains – Greatest Hits (2001) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

Alice In Chains - Greatest Hits (2001) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

From 1999’s Music Bank box set and its one-CD compilation offshoot, Nothing Safe: The Best of the Box to a 1996 Unplugged CD, the Alice in Chains titles continue to arrive even while the band–and especially reclusive frontman Layne Staley–stagnates. The quartet’s heavy, dirgelike music is aging well, but the 10 songs that comprise Greatest Hits are the basic radio hits. Greatest Hits features no new music, no liner notes, no lyrics, no new photos, and no elaborate packaging. Still, for the rock fan Continue reading “Alice In Chains – Greatest Hits (2001) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”
