This album really didn’t get the attention it deserved. All of the songs are amazing from Chicago’s hit Hard To Say I’m Sorry to Love At Second Sight all of the songs are special. Sarah Brightman’s 1999 release Eden applies her rich, supple voice to 16 tracks that range from classical to pop to haunting ballads. The album features “Il Mio Cuore Va,” Titanic’s “My Heart Will Go On” sung in Italian; “Scene d’Amour,” the theme from The English Patient; and “Nessun Dorma” from Puccini’s Turandot. Brightman’s pop side emerges with tracks like “Dust in the Wind” and the Richard Marx-written and -produced “The Last Words You Said.” Eden’s wide range and Brightman’s beautiful voice are a winning combination. Broadway star Sarah Brightman lends her ethereal, angelic vocals to another combination of classical and pop, resulting in a solid, stirring collection. This outing, the ex-Mrs. Andrew Lloyd Webber adapts Rachmaninov (“How Fare This Spot”), Beethoven (“Figlio Perduto”), and Handel (“Solo Con Te”) alongside the brothers Gibb and Simon and Garfunkel. The uncanny thing is how canny Brightman is at bridging the contemporary with the classics so that they seem timeless. Mistaken Identity should have established Kim Carnes as a huge international star. Her Rod Stewart rasp, affiliation with Kenny Rogers, management by Ken Kragen when he was arguably at his peak, makes one wonder why the across-the-board success of “Bette Davis Eyes” couldn’t be duplicated. Three years after the success of this album, Tina Turner actually did conquer the world, the various producers on Private Dancer weaving enough different textures to make for a multi-dimensional masterpiece. Fired by Columbia Records in 1973, Clive Davis took over tiny Bell Records in 1974 and turned it into Arista, determined to re-establish his record-selling credentials. One beneficiary of this was Melissa Manchester, who had made two good, but poor-selling albums for Bell. Davis turned on the money tap, and the result was this L.A.-recorded Vini Poncia/Richard Perry production that seemed determined to turn Manchester into a pop diva. Totally Hot is one of the most fun albums from Olivia Newton John. Total abandon is its trademark, the atmosphere lightened up a bit, and from top to bottom it is one of her most satisfying projects. “Please Don’t Keep Me Waiting” is a girl group all grown up. Is it Newton-John’s voice or Michael Botticker’s synthesizer at the end of the first track? A little jarring for her country audience, but she takes care of them on “Dancin’ ‘Round and ‘Round,” a wonderful country-pop tune and quick about face. As with the Let Me Be There release, her name is prominently splashed on the cover and the tan background suits her well, with the mysterious look with the kerchief on the inside cover as playful as the music. Barry Manilow’s debut album proves to be a far different animal than its glitzier successors; it’s fairly raw and unpolished, though his dramatic vocal style is already well established here. The material roams from impassioned balladeering (“I Am Your Child,” “One of These Days”) to chunky country (“Sweetwater Jones”), driving rock (“Oh My Lady”), and ’40s-style swing (“Cloudburst”) — and that’s just side one. “Could It Be Magic,” of course, is what pulled Manilow above the pack; it’s a textbook summary of the dramatic orchestration and swooning vocals that have long marked his style. As a solo artist, Diana Ross is one of the most successful female singers of the rock era. If you factor in her work as the lead singer of the Supremes in the 1960s, she may be the most successful. With her friends Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Barbara Martin, Ross formed the Primettes vocal quartet in 1959. Karla Bonoff seems to have had some trouble coming up with material for her second album, which may explain why it took two years (a long time in the ’70s) and contained covers of “When You Walk in the Room” and “The Water Is Wide,” and also why the originals weren’t as uniformly excellent as those on her first album. True, leadoff track “Trouble Again” was a gem (as Linda Ronstadt proved when she recorded it on her Cry Like a Rainstorm — Howl Like the Wind album in 1989), but some of the other material was only pedestrian.
