“My Only True Friend,” from Southern Blood, Gregg Allman’s final album, is a cipher, much like the man himself — private, reserved, and complex. Though twin, ringing, blues-drenched guitars introduce it, the song just as quickly morphs into a ballad: “You and I both know, this river will surely flow to an end/Keep me in your heart…I hope you’re haunted by the music of my soul…But you and I both know, the road is my only true friend….” The blues guitars cascade in again, adding resonance. This is the only track here that Allman co-wrote, but it’s fine enough to join the shortlist of his classics — “Midnight Rider,” “Melissa,” “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More,” etc. Continue reading “Gregg Allman – Southern Blood (2017)”

With his laid-back rootsy style, J.J. Cale was best known for writing “After Midnight” and “Cocaine,” songs that Eric Clapton later made into hits. But Cale’s influence wasn’t only through songwriting — his distinctly loping sense of rhythm and shuffling boogie became the blueprint for the adult-oriented roots rock of Clapton and Mark Knopfler, among others. Cale’s refusal to vary the sound of his music over the course of his career caused some critics to label him as a one-trick pony, but he managed to build a dedicated cult following with his sporadically released recordings. People, Hell and Angels is a collection of quality studio tracks recorded (mostly) in 1968-1969 as the Experience was coming to an end and Jimi was renewing his friendships with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles, who appear here as sidemen on most of these tracks. The surprising thing about this set is not the sound quality (which is exceptional) or that these all sound like finished tracks, but the fact that even avid Hendrix bootleg collectors are unlikely to have heard most of this material. Santana is the primary exponent of Latin-tinged rock, particularly due to their combination of Latin percussion (congas, timbales, etc.) with bandleader Carlos Santana’s distinctive, high-pitched lead guitar playing. The group was the last major act to emerge from the psychedelic San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and enjoyed massive success at the end of the decade and into the early ’70s. The musical direction then changed to a more contemplative and jazzy style as the band’s early personnel gradually departed, leaving the name in the hands of Carlos Santana, who guided the group to consistent commercial success over the next quarter-century. British singer and guitarist Chris Rea has enjoyed a run of popularity in Europe during the late ’80s and early ’90s after almost a decade of previous recording. Rea started out performing with a local group called Magdalene, taking David Coverdale’s place; the band won a national talent contest in 1975 as the Beautiful Losers, but still failed to get a record contract. Originally a hard-driving rocker in the vein of fellow Michigan garage rockers the Rationals and Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger developed into one of the most popular heartland rockers over the course of the ’70s. Combining the driving charge of Ryder’s Detroit Wheels with Stonesy garage rock and devotion to hard-edged soul and R&B, he crafted a distinctively American sound. While he never attained the critical respect of his contemporary Bruce Springsteen, Seger did develop a dedicated following through constant touring with his Silver Bullet Band.
