AliaVox’s Orient-Occident 1200-1700 is unique in Jordi Savall’s recorded output in that, despite the title, it has no correspondence whatsoever with any specific historical or musicological program. Rather, like the “East meets West” albums pairing violinist Yehudi Menhuin with sitar player Ravi Shankar, Orient-Occident 1200-1700 brings Savall and ace Hespèrion XXI percussionist Pedro Estevan into the orbit of Greek santur player Dimitris Psonis, Israeli oud player Yair Dalal, Moroccan oudist Driss El Maloumi, and three Afghan traditional musicians — Osman Ahrman, Khaled Arman, and Siar Hashimi. Head Hunters was a pivotal point in Herbie Hancock’s career, bringing him into the vanguard of jazz fusion. Hancock had pushed avant-garde boundaries on his own albums and with Miles Davis, but he had never devoted himself to the groove as he did on Head Hunters. Drawing heavily from Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, and James Brown, Hancock developed deeply funky, even gritty, rhythms over which he soloed on electric synthesizers, bringing the instrument to the forefront in jazz. The very title of First Rose of Spring — Willie Nelson’s 70th or 94th or 143rd, all depending on how you count things — suggests a bit of a rebirth, an emotion that hasn’t been particularly prevalent on the albums Willie recorded and released during his eighties. Turns out, the sentiment of the title and its accompanying song is a bit of a feint, since there are a fair number of nods to Nelson’s advanced age scattered through this 2020 record, but the tone of the album isn’t especially meditative or bleak. It’s easy to write off There’s a Riot Goin’ On as one of two things — Sly Stone’s disgusted social commentary or the beginning of his slow descent into addiction.
