Santana – Blessings And Miracles (2021)

Santana - Blessings And Miracles (2021)

Blessings and Miracles belongs to the Supernatural lineage, an album where Santana often cedes the spotlight to a diverse array of guest stars. What sounded fresh in 1999 now sounds slightly formulaic in 2021, especially since Santana reunite with Rob Thomas, the Matchbox Twenty singer who helped turn Supernatural’s “Smooth” into an international hit back in the days of Y2K. Duran Duran – Future Past (2021) [Deluxe Edition]

Duran Duran - Future Past (2021) [Deluxe Edition]

Future Past is perhaps the quintessential title for Duran Duran in 2021, when the veteran New Romantics trade in their legacy while keeping their focus directly on the future. Occasionally, the gilded synthesized surfaces of Future Past recall the futurism of New Wave, but Duran Duran take pains to not re-create the past by inviting a fresh set of collaborators into the studio. Now serving up a third installment of gut-busting, freewheeling, acid-soaked hard rock, I’m a Freak Baby is the gift that keeps on giving. U.K. archivists Grapefruit Records first launched the series in 2016, scooping the cream off the top of England’s heaping barrel of late-1960s/early-’70s sludge rock, only to uncover yet more layers on their 2019 follow-up, I’m a Freak 2 Baby. Various Artists – New Moon’s In The Sky (The British Progressive Pop Sounds Of 1970) (2019) [3CD]

Various Artists - New Moon's In The Sky (The British Progressive Pop Sounds Of 1970) (2019) [3CD]

Like the late ’60s that had just come to a shuddering close, 1970 was a confusing time for music in the U.K. (and everywhere else too). Psychedelia was fading out, bubblegum was on its last bounce, prog was getting fired up, and bands were getting heavier, moving to the country, and searching for mellow vibes. An expansive overview of the year would make for some very eclectic listening; the Grapefruit label chose to narrow the scope down just a bit on their three-disc collection New Moon’s in the Sky: The British Progressive Pop Sounds of 1970. Various Artists – Beyond The Pale Horizon (The British Progressive Pop Sounds Of 1972) (2021) [3CD]

Another captivating entry into their year-specific archival series, Grapefruit Records offers up Beyond the Pale Horizon: The British Progressive Pop Sounds of 1972. Arguing that 1972 was the year that British music finally broke free of the ’60s and began to innovate, this heaping three-disc anthology boasts a typically eclectic array of icons, cult faves, and everything in between. While “progressive” may be the imperative term here, this is by no means a prog rock compilation even if bands like Van der Graaf Generator, Uriah Heep, and Yes are all well-represented. Bill Haley – The Warner Brothers Years And More (1999) [6CDs, Box Set]

Bill Haley - The Warner Brothers Years And More (1999) [6CDs, Box Set]

The rating of this six-CD set is no joke — yes, Bill Haley was supposed to be an irrelevant artist during the 1960s, but he did, in fact, generate well over 100 good and far-better-than-decent sides that are contained in this set. No, there’s nothing remotely as earth-shattering or important as his best work for Decca from 1954-1955, and even most hardcore fans of that material may find the cost of this set difficult to justify; but take it from someone who shelled out for this box, it’s worth a LOT more than you’d ever guess without hearing it — Haley and his band still knew how to work a song, as demonstrated several dozen times on this set. Showaddywaddy – Complete Singles Collection 1974-1987 (2015) [33CDs, Box Set]

Showaddywaddy - Complete Singles Collection 1974-1987 (2015) [33CDs, Box Set]

Showaddywaddy had more UK hits in the 1970s than any other act…including Abba! From their winning appearance on an edition of ‘New Faces’, the ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ of the day, to become runners-up in the series’ ‘All Winners Final’, it took just a matter of months until the band released and secured their debut hit, ‘Hey Rock And Roll’, which reached #2 in the UK Singles Chart. Johnny Burnette – The Train Kept a Rollin’ Memphis to Hollywood: The Complete Recordings 1955-1964 (2003) [9CDs, Box Set]

Johnny Burnette - The Train Kept a Rollin' Memphis to Hollywood: The Complete Recordings 1955-1964 (2003) [9CDs, Box Set]

If ever there were an act that deserved more than it got, it was Johnny Burnette and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio. These three young men — Johnny and his brother Dorsey and guitarist extraordinaire Paul Burlison — were the authentic rockabilly article, hailing, like Elvis Presley, from Memphis proper. They were rawer than Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis put together and at their best more exciting to listen to. And while Burnette went on to write hits for Ricky Nelson and score a few of his own, it’s the Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio sides — none of which ever charted — for which he is most remembered. Neil Young – Young Shakespeare (2021)

Neil Young - Young Shakespeare (2021)

Just two months after the release of his seminal album After The Gold Rush, Neil Young played a solo show at The Shakespeare Theater, Stratford, CT on January 22 1971. The show was filmed and recorded, and the concert shown on German TV later in 1971. In 2020, while Neil and his team were reviewing his Archive for future projects, Neil re-visited the 16mm film and audio recording of this show that had been preserved in the Archive for almost 50 years. Piecing together the tapes and footage, Neil realized that he had the full concert – the film of which is the earliest live footage of Neil performing that is known to exist. Brian Setzer – Gotta Have The Rumble (2021)

Brian Setzer - Gotta Have The Rumble (2021)

Produced by Julian Raymond (Glen Campbell and Cheap Trick), GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE contains songs, all written or co-written by Setzer, and was recorded in Minneapolis (Setzer’s adopted hometown) and Nashville. GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE is a red-hot album from start to finish–American music amped up to 10–with songs that are full of dynamism and bravado. Highlights include “Checkered Flag,” “Smash Up On Highway One,” “Drip Drop,” “The Cat with 9 Wives,” “One Bad Habit” and “Rockabilly Banjo.” Continue reading “Brian Setzer – Gotta Have The Rumble (2021)”

Iron Maiden – Senjutsu (2021) [Limited Edition, 2CD]

Iron Maiden - Senjutsu (2021) [Limited Edition, 2CD]

Senjutsu is the band’s first studio album in nearly six years, following The Book of Souls (2015), marking the longest gap between two studio Iron Maiden albums. This is also their second double album, and their first studio album since Powerslave (1984) to have no songwriting contributions from guitarist Dave Murray in any way, as well as the first since Virtual XI (1998) to feature multiple songs written by bassist Steve Harris alone. Don Henley took some time before completing his highly anticipated third album, The End of the Innocence. Although he manages to duplicate much of the magic of his previous album, Henley has backed off of the synthesizers and expanded his musical palette. He uses background vocals to great effect, whether it’s the tragic ballad “New York Minute” (with vocal group Take 6) or the angry rocker “I Will Not Go Quietly” (with Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses).
