Thanks to a prolific work ethic that puts even Damon Albarn’s extensive list of side projects to shame, self-taught producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist Steven Wilson has gradually become one of the U.K.’s most critically acclaimed cult artists. Born in Kingston Upon Thames in London in 1967, Wilson was inspired to pursue a career in music after devouring his parents’ Pink Floyd and Donna Summer records, and by the age of 12 he had already started to experiment with different guitar and recording techniques. As indicated by its name, the Alan Parsons Project was not a band so much as a concept overseen by the titular Parsons, a successful producer and engineer. Born in Britain on December 20, 1948, he began his musical career as a staff engineer at EMI Studios, and first garnered significant industry exposure via his work on the Beatles’ 1969 masterpiece, Abbey Road. Parsons subsequently worked with Paul McCartney on several of Wings’ earliest albums; he also oversaw recordings from Al Stewart, Cockney Rebel, and Pilot, but solidified his reputation by working on Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon Continue reading “Alan Parsons – Studio, Live & Compilation Albums (1993 – 2010)”

The early 1980s were filled with pop stars who seemed larger than life, but very few cut as indelible figure as Boy George. During the heyday of Culture Club — which lasted from their first hit, “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” in 1982 until 1984 — Boy George deftly blended soulful authenticity with knowing artificiality, singing songs inspired by Motown while embracing androgyny. A product of New York City’s early-’70s glam rock scene, Twisted Sister were eager students of the New York Dolls, with the theatrics of Kiss and the shock rock of Alice Cooper thrown in for good measure. While providing an excellent role model from an artistic standpoint, the Dolls’ disappointing record sales and subsequent implosion would make it difficult for such faithful disciples as Twisted Sister to land a record deal, and the band wound up struggling for nearly a decade before finally getting their big break in the early ’80s. Earth, Wind & Fire were one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands of the ’70s. Conceived by drummer, bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, EWF’s all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psychedelia, blues, folk, African music, and, later on, disco. With her pre-bop piano style and cool but sensual singing, Diana Krall took the jazz world by storm in the late ’90s. By the turn of the century she was firmly established as one of the biggest sellers in jazz. Her 1996 album, All for You, was a Nat King Cole tribute that showed the singer/pianist’s roots, and she had great success in that traditional-minded mode before branching out into other styles in the 2010s. Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late ’70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy. Led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler, the group built their sound upon the laid-back blues-rock of J.J. Cale, but they also had jazz and country inflections, occasionally dipping into the epic song structures of progressive rock. Continue reading “Dire Straits – Discography (1978 – 2005)”

Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Bone to become the most popular American rock & roll band of the ’90s. After Mother Love Bone’s vocalist, Andrew Wood, overdosed on heroin in 1990, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament assembled a new band, bringing in Mike McCready on lead guitar and recording a demo with Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron on drums. Paul Simon is one of the most successful and respected songwriters of the rock era. Rising to fame in the mid-’60s, Simon’s songs were mature and literate, but also melodically engaging, and spoke to the concerns and uncertainties of a generation. As the 1960s gave way to the ’70s and ’80s, Simon’s work tended to focus on the personal rather than the larger world, but he also expanded his musical palette, and helped introduce many rock and pop fans to world music. Michael Jackson wasn’t merely the biggest pop star of his era, shaping the sound and style of the ’70s and ’80s; he was one of the defining stars of the 20th century, a musician who changed the contours of American culture. A preternaturally gifted singer and dancer, Jackson first rose to stardom in 1969 as the 11-year-old frontman for his family’s band, the Jackson 5. As remarkable a run as the Jackson 5 had — at the dawn of the ’70s, each of their first four singles went to number one and they stayed near the top of the charts for the next five years — Continue reading “Michael Jackson – Studio Albums (1979-1991)”
